AJ McLean is hosting. Nicole Scherzinger is judging. The bandmates have never seen each other. Welcome to Building the Band, Netflix’s high-stakes music competition where harmony matters more than image, until it doesn’t.
Premiering July 9, 2025, with a four-episode debut, Building the Band flips the music reality genre. Singers form groups based on sound alone. No visuals. No branding. Just talent and connection.
Blind Harmony, Real Risk
The format is simple but ruthless. Contestants build their bands inside isolation booths. They can hear and feel each other’s performances but never see one another. Looks, presence, and backstory are completely off the table.
Singers choose their bandmates based entirely on voice, chemistry, and instinct. Only after their group is set do they face the reality of image, choreography, and performance as a unit.

Some bands click. Others collapse. Either way, it’s must-watch chaos with real stakes.
McLean Hosts, Scherzinger Mentors, and the Judges Go Deep in Building the Band

Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean guides the series as host. Nicole Scherzinger brings her own group experience and sharp instincts to the mentor chair.
She is joined by guest judges Kelly Rowland (Destiny’s Child) and the late Liam Payne (One Direction), who both arrive in episode seven. Their resumes speak for themselves, and their critiques reflect the highs and lows of band life under pressure.
Behind the show are executive producers Cat Lawson, Alison Holloway, Katrina Morrison, Clara Elliot, and Simon Crossley. The series is produced by Remarkable Entertainment, part of Banijay UK.
Weekly Drops, Immediate Drama

Episodes will roll out in three batches:
- July 9: Episodes 1 to 4
- July 16: Episodes 5 to 7
- July 23: Episodes 8 to 10
That gives viewers time to pick favorites, change loyalties, and argue about everything from vocals to group cohesion.
Unlike most competition shows, Building the Band isn’t about soloists pretending to be a team. This one starts with connection and ends with pressure. The best bands will form from instinct. The rest will crash on stage.
