Going into High on Life 2, I honestly didn’t know what to expect. Since I haven’t played the first game, I jumped into this universe with zero background knowledge. Still, the idea of a first-person shooter filled with aliens, bounty hunting, and talking weapons instantly grabbed my attention.
From the moment the game starts, High on Life 2 throws you headfirst into a brand-new world that feels like a bizarre sci-fi fever dream. The best way I can describe it is this. It’s like Star Wars on crack, and I mean that in the most badass way possible.
Exploration and Lore Actually Matter
One of the biggest things I’ve learned so far is that exploration plays a huge role in this game. Instead of rushing through objectives, I found myself slowing down and learning the lore. The game rewards curiosity, and the dialogue adds layers to the world constantly.
In fact, I spent at least 30 minutes just walking around, listening, and taking everything in. Normally, I skip lore-heavy sections in shooters. However, High on Life 2 makes the writing entertaining enough that you actually want to stick around.
Because of that, the universe feels deeper than I expected. Even as a newcomer, I didn’t feel lost. Instead, I felt like I was discovering a strange alien world piece by piece.
Gameplay: Smooth Movement and Fun Combat

Gameplay-wise, I was genuinely impressed. The shooting feels smooth and responsive, and movement is quick and satisfying. At the same time, the movement makes the game feel fast and fluid.
It’s almost like if Halo had a skateboard built into the gameplay. That’s the vibe.
One of the coolest parts is the skateboard-style traversal mechanic. It makes getting around the environment quick and fun. Honestly, it feels like Halo with a skateboard. Because of that movement system, the game stays energetic even when you aren’t fighting.

Combat also feels solid. I quickly found a favorite strategy. Knife people in the face.
Knifey is easily one of the funniest and most satisfying parts of the game so far. Not only does it feel great mechanically, but it also adds personality to the combat. The controls feel polished, and the gameplay loop stays fun instead of repetitive. As a result, I kept wanting to fight more enemies just to see what happens next..
The Voice Cast and Talking Weapons Steal the Show

Now let’s talk about one of the best parts of High on Life. The voice acting.
Even though the gameplay impressed me, the voice acting might be the real star of the show. The cast is stacked, and the writing delivers nonstop entertainment.
Almost immediately, I recognized Gus. The second I heard him, I thought, “Wait… is that J.B. Smoove?” And sure enough, it is. The moment I realized the game had J.B. Smoove in it, I knew I was in for a good time.
Even better, the weapons don’t just shoot. They interact with you constantly. They comment on the world, they react to what you’re doing, and they throw jokes into the middle of intense action. Because of that, the game never feels quiet or empty. Instead, it feels like you’re stuck in a hilarious sci-fi adventure where everything talks back.
At the same time, the weapons help fill you in on the lore. So even when the action gets crazy, the game still builds the world around you.
High on Life 2 Makes Me Want to Play the First One

Even though I haven’t played the first game, I can tell this universe has history. The characters feel established, and the world feels like it has layers. Because of that, the game makes me curious about what came before.
Honestly, it’s crazy to realize there’s already a whole story behind these characters. As a result, I already want to go back and play the first one just to understand everything I’m missing.
Any game that makes you want to explore its past is doing something right.
Final Thoughts: I’m High on Life 2

Overall, my first impressions of High on Life are extremely positive. The world feels creative, the gameplay feels smooth, and the humor hits at the perfect moments. More importantly, the game feels fun, which is something a lot of shooters forget.
Squanch Games clearly put personality into every part of this experience. The game feels chaotic, hilarious, and action-packed all at once. Because of that, it stands out from other first-person shooters.
I can’t wait to keep playing and really dive deeper into this universe.
Because apparently, it’s time to save the galaxy… again.
