The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants sails into theaters December 19, and yes — it looks gloriously unhinged.
The world’s favorite underwater optimist is diving headfirst into high-seas mayhem for his biggest movie adventure yet. This time, SpongeBob’s got something to prove. Desperate to show he’s got grit, he chases the legendary ghost pirate The Flying Dutchman into uncharted ocean depths that not even Bikini Bottom’s bravest have dared to explore.
With longtime SpongeBob voices like Tom Kenny, Clancy Brown, and Bill Fagerbakke returning, and surprise appearances from George Lopez, Regina Hall, Ice Spice, and Mark Hamill. This cast is stacked like a Krabby Patty with everything on it.
A Bigger Boat and a Pirate Ghost
Directed by Derek Drymon and penned by comedy heavyweights Pam Brady and Matt Lieberman, Search for SquarePants marks the latest theatrical outing from Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Movies. And if the title didn’t give it away, this is a nautical quest with ghost ships, underwater peril, and at least one life lesson wrapped in a jellyfish net of chaos and cartoon logic.

Storywise, this is SpongeBob pushing past jellyfishing and boating school flunks. This is about legacy. It’s about confronting spooky maritime spirits. And it’s about how far one porous kitchen sponge will go to impress his crustacean boss.
Holiday Box Office, Meet Bikini Bottom

The release date lands right in the sweet spot of holiday moviegoing, and it’s not going up against anything else quite like it. With a generation-spanning fanbase, a built-in global audience, and a cast that somehow includes both Mr. Lawrence and Ice Spice, this one is poised to soak up holiday weekend attention like… well, a sponge.
Expect big laughs, bigger energy, and enough nautical nonsense to capsize the multiplex. The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants is gunning for both kids and the nostalgic grown-ups who still know all the lyrics to the theme song.
Catch up on Spongebob and his adventures on Paramount+ ahead of the new film.
