The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is officially opening its doors on September 22, 2026! Los Angeles is about to gain a destination built entirely around the power of stories. Founded by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, the Lucas Museum will anchor Exposition Park with a bold new space that treats illustrated storytelling as a universal language for how we understand one another and the world.

As Lucas puts it, “Stories are mythology, and when illustrated, they help humans understand the mysteries of life.” Hobson adds, “This is a museum of the people’s art, the images are illustrations of beliefs we live with every day. For that reason, this art belongs to everyone.”

The Lucas Museum – A New Cultural Landmark in Exposition Park

Set on an 11-acre campus in Exposition Park, the Lucas Museum arrives as a purpose-built cultural hub with galleries, two theaters, a library, a restaurant, a café, a retail store, and community spaces.

The museum was designed by Ma Yansong of MAD, with gardens by Mia Lehrer of Studio-MLA and Stantec as executive architect, creating a seamless indoor and outdoor experience that invites you to wander, linger, and return.

Thirty-Five Galleries, Forty Thousand Stories

The permanent collection spans more than 40,000 works and will unfold across thirty-five galleries that occupy 100,000 square feet inside a 300,000-square-foot building. Gallery titles reflect the human experience, including love, family, community, play, work, sports, childhood, and adventure.

Expect familiar pieces by beloved illustrators, mural paintings from the 20th and 21st centuries, deep holdings of comic art, children’s book illustrations, and visionary science-fiction art. Cinematic artifacts will also be on display, from movie posters to documentaries that spotlight artists and filmmakers, alongside treasures from the Lucas Archives that include models, props, concept art, and costumes.

Design That Moves With You

Inside and out, the museum’s design is meant to spark curiosity. Ma Yansong’s fluid architecture and Mia Lehrer’s lush landscape create a living environment that frames narrative art as something you can feel as much as see. Garden pathways and gathering spaces knit the campus into Exposition Park, inviting families, students, and fans to make a day of it.
