I love when a movie is born loud and fast, and this one came roaring out of the timeline. At the global press conference, Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa traced a straight line from a late-night tweet to a real package with the right writer and director. What followed was a rare development sprint that kept fan energy hot and turned a buddy-cop dream into Prime Video’s The Wrecking Crew.
The Tweet That Lit The Fuse

Dave Bautista says the whole thing started with a late-night impulse, a simple public wish that the internet turned into momentum.
So anyway, I tweeted one night, you know, I want to do a buddy cop film with Jason Momoa or something like lethal Weapon, and I want David Leitch to direct it. This is before I knew you (DAVE BAUTISTA TURNS TO ANGEL MANUEL SOTO) so now that I’m sitting right next to you. But But anyway, that was my tweet, and it’s, like, exploded.
Like it got more response than anything I’ve ever tweeted, which has been mostly, you know, garbage. Just random thoughts. But anyway, people also responded, so I called Jason. I was like, hey man, I just wanna let you know about this because you’re getting such a response.
That moment did two things at once. It proved the audience hunger for this pairing, and it gave Bautista and Jason Momoa permission to move fast. Bautista’s call to Momoa was not a hypothetical. It was the first brick in the road to The Wrecking Crew.
The Corden Catalyst And The Viral Snowball
The tweet did not just trend. It turned into on-air energy and real packaging heat almost immediately.
I think the next night he was on James Corden and got asked about it, and he told James he was like, he’s like, yeah, we’re doing it. And so then it just really, really blew up. So it was like one thing after another. And then I think our agents like jumped all over it.
Momentum compounds. A talk-show nod became a public commitment, which became a race among reps to turn a fan-willed idea into a real movie. That is how a wish turns into a window.

Jason Momoa backs that origin story from his side of the call sheet.
And yeah, he jumped on Twitter, which I didn’t know. He just blasted it out there and set it up, and. That’s how it all started then. The funny thing is, is that, a bunch of writers were coming in and they wanted to like, it was a big thing, went viral and writers wanted to come in. And Jonathan, our showrunner, was like, Jonathan Tropper was like, I want to we’d like to try.
I’m like, yeah boss, fun. But I mean, there’s a bunch of people that came in and, his was amazing. And yeah, so I think he writes really well for us, knows us extremely well. And, we love working with him. So that’s how it kind of all came together.
Jonathan Tropper’s script fit the two stars like it was tailored, which is exactly what director Ángel Manuel Soto later saw on the page. The chemistry was the product, and the writing captured it.
Three Months From Tweet To The Wrecking Crew Deal

Here is the part that sounds impossible in today’s development climate, yet it happened.
nd it was like, it just like it happened really fast. I think from like that tweet to like us actually selling the project was like a three month, you know, you know, time period. It was it was very, very fast.
Three months is the difference between a fleeting viral moment and a film that lands. The speed matters because it preserved the audience’s excitement from the tweet and the talk-show spark, delivering The Wrecking Crew while the idea still felt fresh.
When Fandom Becomes The Producer

This is a fan-manifested buddy-cop fantasy made real by two leads who already proved their screen chemistry on See. The tweet gave the internet a stake, the on-air confirmation turned curiosity into certainty, and the fast close locked it in before hype cooled.
Tropper’s fit-to-measure script and Soto’s eye for action with heart did the rest, shaping The Wrecking Crew into a movie about estranged half-brothers that lets the laughs and punches come from character. The path from public wish to production is a story audiences understand, which is why it travels so well.
The Bigger Picture For The Wrecking Crew

Viral origin stories can fade. This one did not, because the team aligned behind one clear promise, a classic buddy-cop engine with modern personality. When The Wrecking Crew hits, it does so with the confidence of a movie that already proved itself in the court of public opinion, then backed it up with craft.
Find out if The Wrecking Crew is worthy of its virality when it drops on Prime Video on January 28, 2026.
