Na Hong-Jin is making his San Diego Comic-Con debut with Hope, his massive new sci-fi action thriller from NEON. The panel will feature an exclusive introduction from Hoyeon, an in-depth conversation with Na, and never-before-seen footage from the film before its U.S. theatrical release this September.
A Monster Sci-Fi Epic From a Master of Tension
Hope is set in the remote South Korean village of Hope Harbor, where a mysterious creature has torn through the community. Police and local hunters set out to find the beast, only to discover they may be the ones being hunted.
That setup already sounds terrifying, but Hope is clearly playing on a much bigger scale. The story begins as a creature hunt, then expands into panic, survival, alien contact, and a tragedy born from misunderstanding. Na has always been incredible at turning fear into something deeper, and the film sounds like his biggest swing yet.
Hoyeon Helps Welcome Comic-Con Into Hope Harbor

The SDCC panel will include a special introduction from Hoyeon, best known for Squid Game. In Hope, she plays Sung-ae, a foul-mouthed police officer with firearms expertise who is forced into chaos when Hope Harbor comes under attack.

The press notes reveal that Hoyeon trained in firearms, tactical movement, high-speed manual driving, and intense physical action for the role. That makes this especially exciting as her Korean feature film debut, because it sounds like she is not just stepping into the film. She is throwing herself into the fire.
Na Hong-Jin Goes Bigger Than Ever

Na’s filmography already makes this a must-watch. The Chaser, The Yellow Sea, and The Wailing all premiered at Cannes, and Hope continued that streak by premiering in competition at this year’s festival.
What makes the film fascinating is how it appears to carry forward Na’s favorite themes. Ignorance, fear, perspective, and violent misunderstanding are all at the center of the story, but this time they play out through humans and extraterrestrial beings. That is a wild escalation from rural horror to cosmic tragedy, and honestly, that is exactly why this sounds so exciting.
The Hope Cast and Craft Are Ridiculous

The cast alone is enough to make the movie feel enormous. Hwang Jung-min plays police chief Bum-seok, Zo In-sung plays hunter Sung-ki, and Hoyeon plays officer Sung-ae. The alien side includes Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Taylor Russell, and Cameron Britton.
Behind the camera, Na worked with cinematographer Hong Kyung-pyo, production designer Lee Hwokyoung, composer Michael Abels, and stunt coordinator Yoo Sang Seob. The press notes describe large-scale chase sequences, creature design, motion capture, practical locations, and action filmed across South Korea and Romania. That sounds like a full cinematic workout.
Hope will be released theatrically by NEON in the U.S. this September. Before then, San Diego Comic-Con attendees will get an exclusive look at never-before-seen footage during Na Hong-Jin’s debut panel for the film.
