Mattel is celebrating International Day of Play in a way that feels bigger than a single calendar moment. This month, the company marked its third annual International Day of Play and sixth annual Play It Forward Global Volunteer Week with volunteer events, community partnerships, and immersive play experiences designed to reach children and families in Los Angeles and around the world. From Camp Mattel and toy donations to new inclusive Hot Wheels products and support for Save the Children, the company is using its biggest strength, the power of play, to create something that feels both joyful and tangible.
Camp Mattel Put Play Front and Center

One of the clearest highlights of the celebration was Camp Mattel, which welcomed about 700 children from local elementary schools and organizations including the Children’s Institute of Los Angeles, the Wiley Institute, Athletes in the Making, and the Friendship Foundation to Mattel headquarters. The event gave kids a full day of games, imagination, and active play, with employees volunteering throughout to help bring the experience to life.
That kind of event matters because it shows what International Day of Play can look like when it becomes more than a slogan. Play was not treated like an extra. It was the center of the day. The event even included a soccer clinic hosted in partnership with LAFC, which added another layer of movement, teamwork, and fun.
Play It Forward Expanded Beyond One Event



Mattel’s larger Play It Forward week also pushed into several other areas in a meaningful way. The company launched Hot Wheels® All Drivers Welcome, a new vehicle assortment developed with nonprofit partners to increase representation and celebrate diverse communities. The collection includes vehicles created alongside the Braille Institute, Easterseals Disability Services, and Starlight Children’s Foundation.

Mattel also used the month to spotlight its work with Save the Children, Amazon, and Amazon MGM Studios in support of Masters of the Universe. That collaboration includes a public service campaign, a charitable Amazon Wish List that lets consumers donate Mattel toys to underserved children, and broader participation in Amazon’s Global Volunteer Month. It is a smart extension of the company’s message, connecting entertainment, philanthropy, and access to play in a way that feels active instead of performative.
A Global Push Built Around Community

Beyond Los Angeles, Mattel employees around the world joined in through local volunteer work, including building homes with Habitat for Humanity, supporting Ronald McDonald House programs, and donating time and toys to children’s hospitals. The company also partnered with Project Sunshine for its first Summer Solstice Play-A-Thon at the Mattel Toy Store in El Segundo, using toy-filled blind bags and play-based activities to support children facing medical challenges.
That broader footprint is what gives this effort real weight. Mattel is not only talking about the importance of play. It is building programs, showing up physically, and putting employees into communities where that impact can actually be felt.
Mattel’s International Day of Play and Play It Forward Global Volunteer Week are taking place throughout June, with events and charitable initiatives already underway.
