Star Fox Is Finally Flying Back With a Full Nintendo Switch 2 Overhaul

Nintendo just gave Fox McCloud the kind of comeback that should have longtime fans screaming “Do a barrel roll” at their screens all over again. During today’s Nintendo Direct, the company announced that Star Fox, a cinematic reimagining of Star Fox 64, will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on June 25. This is not just a quick port or nostalgia dump either. Nintendo is giving the Lylat System a full visual overhaul, new cutscenes, fully voiced dialogue, an orchestral soundtrack, new multiplayer features, and modern Nintendo Switch 2 upgrades that make this feel like a real return for one of the company’s most beloved crews.

Fox McCloud’s Return Looks Bigger Than a Basic Remaster

The biggest reason this reveal hits so hard is that Nintendo seems to understand exactly what fans wanted. Star Fox is based on Star Fox 64, but it is being presented as a much more fully realized adventure with revamped character designs, refreshed stage visuals, and expanded mission briefings that dig deeper into the world and characters of the Lylat System. Corneria, Zoness, nebula interiors, and the rest of the star system are getting a much richer presentation, which should finally give this universe the visual treatment it has deserved for years.

The core hook still sounds gloriously intact. Andross is after control of the Lylat System, and Fox, Peppy, Falco, and Slippy are once again the ones standing in his way. Players will pilot the Arwing, blast through enemy forces, and pull off all the classic evasive maneuvers like boosts, somersaults, braking, and barrel rolls. That familiar arcade-like rhythm remains the backbone of the game, which is exactly what this comeback needed.

The Lylat System Is Getting New Ways to Fight Through

Nintendo is also giving the game more to do beyond just replaying old memories. Campaign Mode still lets players travel across the system and take branching routes depending on what objectives they complete, which keeps the replayability alive. Challenge Mode adds new stage objectives and extra tests, while Battle Mode introduces a brand-new 4-vs-4 multiplayer setup with up to eight players split between Team Star Fox and Team Star Wolf. Those battles will include zone control on Corneria, crystal collection on Fichina, and cargo retrieval in Sector Y, which sounds like exactly the kind of multiplayer chaos this series should have been exploring more often.

The Nintendo Switch 2-specific features also sound like a real selling point. Joy-Con 2 mouse controls allow for more intuitive aiming in solo play, while GameChat and GameShare bring in co-op and social options that let another player jump in as gunner. On top of that, GameChat character avatars and AR filters let players show up as Fox or the crew while chatting, which is silly in the exact right Nintendo way.

June 25 Finally Gives Star Fox Fans a Real Date to Circle

For a series that has spent far too long grounded, this reveal feels like the right kind of relaunch. Nintendo is not just dusting off Star Fox. It is giving the franchise a louder, more cinematic, more feature-rich shot on brand-new hardware, and that alone makes June 25 feel like a date fans should pay attention to. The added detail, modern presentation, and expanded multiplayer make this look like a genuine attempt to remind players why Fox McCloud and crew mattered in the first place.

Star Fox launches June 25 on Nintendo Switch 2. Players will be able to jump into the campaign, challenge stages, and multiplayer modes on Nintendo’s new system, with additional social and control features tied to Nintendo Switch 2 hardware.
