Nintendo and Illumination are not waiting around to build momentum for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Tickets are now live through the film’s official site and major exhibitors, giving fans an early shot at one of spring’s biggest family releases.
The animated sequel follows The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned more than $1.3 billion worldwide, and brings back key creative players including producers Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto, directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, screenwriter Matthew Fogel, and composer Brian Tyler. The official site lists the film as arriving in theaters April 1, 2026.
A Bigger Adventure Begins to Take Shape
Even without a full story breakdown, the pitch already sells scale. This new chapter moves deeper into the larger Super Mario universe and leans into the cosmic energy suggested by the title.
That alone makes the sequel feel like a smart next move. The first film proved Mario could dominate the box office. This one now has the chance to feel even larger, more visually ambitious, and more closely tied to one of Nintendo’s most beloved game eras.

The returning cast also gives the movie a strong base. Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, and Kevin Michael Richardson are all back, while Benny Safdie and Brie Larson join the lineup for the sequel. With the same core creative team returning behind the scenes, Universal and Nintendo seem focused on keeping the first film’s winning formula intact while expanding the world in a bigger direction.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is a Must-See IMAX Event
What makes the ticket launch feel especially important is how clearly The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is being sold as a theatrical event, and more specifically, as an IMAX event. This is not just another animated sequel quietly arriving in theaters. With tickets already on sale and the film being positioned for IMAX from the start, Nintendo, Illumination, and Universal are telling audiences that this adventure is meant to be seen on the biggest screen possible. For a movie with “Galaxy” in the title, that is a smart play.
The first film earned enormous goodwill by giving families, younger audiences, and Nintendo fans a colorful, fast, crowd-pleasing trip through the Mushroom Kingdom. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie now looks ready to go even bigger, with a title that promises larger worlds, more spectacle, and the kind of cosmic scale that should shine in IMAX. If the film delivers on that potential, the premium format could become a major part of the draw, turning this into one of the easiest big-screen sells of the season.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie opens on April 1 in theaters and IMAX. Tickets are on sale now, so fans can lock in their seats ahead of what looks like another major Mario movie event.
