Backyard Sports Returns at SDCC With Animated Series, Game Content, and Franchise Reveals

Backyard Sports is heading to San Diego Comic-Con with a panel built for longtime fans and a new generation of players. Playground Productions will present “Backyard Sports Returns” on Friday, July 24, offering an exclusive look at the future of the beloved kid sports franchise across animation, games, merchandise, and community-driven projects.

The Backyard Kids Are Back in a Big Way

The one-hour panel will give fans a first look at the upcoming Backyard Sports animated series, along with never-before-seen game content and new merchandise. It will also include behind-the-scenes stories from the cast, creators, and contributors helping shape the next era of the franchise.

That is a lot for one panel, but it makes sense for Backyard Sports. The series has always lived in that perfect space between sports, comedy, personality, and playground legend. Characters like Pablo Sanchez, Sunny Day, Kenny Kawaguchi, and the rest of the Backyard crew still have real nostalgia power, especially for fans who grew up treating Pablo like the most dominant athlete in all of video games.

A New Sports Universe Takes Shape

Playground Productions is positioning this as more than a simple comeback. The company is building Backyard Sports into a larger sports universe that spans video games, television, digital media, merchandise, and community initiatives.

That approach could be huge for the franchise. Backyard Sports already has the characters, tone, and multi-sport foundation to support a bigger world. Bringing the animated series and new game content together at Comic-Con makes this feel like a proper relaunch instead of a one-off nostalgia play.

The panel will feature a strong mix of creative leads, performers, and contributors. Lindsay Barnett, Chris Waters, Raheem Jarbo, also known as MegaRan, Ashleigh Crystal Hairston, Deborah Baker Jr., Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Will Neff, Jesus Cannobio, and Vincent Tong are all scheduled to appear.

The voice cast includes Hairston as Sunny Day, Baker as Kimmy Echman, Mintz-Plasse as Dmitri Petrovic, Neff as Clanky, Cannobio as Chico Papas, and Tong as Kenny Kawaguchi. Barnett will also voice the Webber Twins, Reese Worthington, and Vinnie The Gooch. With additional special guests teased, fans may want to keep an eye on this one.

“Backyard Sports Returns” takes place Friday, July 24 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. PT in Room 6BCF at the San Diego Convention Center. The panel will include exclusive footage, game content, merchandise previews, behind-the-scenes stories, and major franchise reveals.
