Contra Is Getting a New Comic Book Series From Mad Cave Studios

Konami Cross Media NY is bringing Contra back into the fight in a new way. The company has announced a licensing agreement with Mad Cave Studios to develop and publish a new comic book line based on Konami’s legendary action video game franchise.

Contra Heads to the Page

The new partnership will launch with a 12-issue comic book series. Mad Cave Studios will also publish multiple trade paperback volumes and a Deluxe Edition.

That gives Contra a full publishing plan instead of a quick one-shot release. It also gives the franchise room to expand its soldiers, alien threats, and sci-fi warfare through longer character-driven storytelling.

The deal covers several major territories. That includes the United States, Canada, Latin America, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.

Mad Cave Takes on a Gaming Classic

Jennifer Coleman, Senior Vice President of Licensing and Marketing at Konami Cross Media NY, called Contra a natural fit for comics. She pointed to the franchise’s adrenaline-heavy action and character-driven foundation as reasons the property works on the page.

Mad Cave Studios also feels like a strong match for this kind of project. The Miami-based publisher has built a growing indie comics presence since launching in 2014. Its portfolio includes Maverick, Nakama Press, and Papercutz.

The studio now gets to tackle one of the most recognizable action franchises in gaming. For fans who grew up with Contra, that means more than just nostalgia. It means the chance to see the franchise’s explosive energy translated into panels, splash pages, and bigger sci-fi storytelling.

A New Mission for Longtime Fans

Contra

Mad Cave CEO and Chief Creative Officer Mark London described Contra as “a cornerstone of gaming history.” He also said the team wants to honor the source material while pushing what fans expect from a sci-fi action comic.

That is the key balance here. Contra needs the chaos, firepower, and over-the-top action fans remember. But a 12-issue run also gives Mad Cave room to build stakes, explore characters, and create a more developed world around the franchise’s constant warfare.

The result could be exactly the kind of comic that works for both longtime players and new readers. Readers do not need to know every old-school code or boss fight to understand heavily armed heroes blasting through alien threats. Though yes, anyone who remembers the Konami Code is probably already smiling.

The First Issue of Contra Arrives in 2027

The new Contra comic series will launch in January 2027. Fans will be able to find the first issue at local comic shops and major book retailers.

For Konami, this continues a broader push to expand classic properties beyond games. For Mad Cave Studios, it is a chance to bring a legendary action franchise into a new medium with real comic book muscle behind it.
