Marvel and Magic: The Gathering are venturing beyond adaptation for their most ambitious collaboration yet. Wizards of the Coast unveiled Magic: The Gathering | Marvel: Darkhold Destiny during New York Comic Con, revealing the first Universes Beyond set created around a completely original story and setting. Doctor Strange, Thor, Hela, and Dormammu will lead a conflict spanning nearly 30 dimensions when the set launches April 7, 2027.
Marvel and Magic Build Something New Together

Previous Universes Beyond sets have translated existing characters, locations, and stories into Magic: The Gathering. Darkhold Destiny takes a fundamentally different approach by using the game to tell a new story within the Marvel Universe.
Marvel and Wizards collaborated to build the narrative around the mechanics and creative foundations of Magic. The goal is not simply to place Marvel characters onto existing card designs. Instead, the teams developed a story capable of naturally expressing the colors, conflicts, and gameplay players expect from a full Magic set.
The title points directly toward the Darkhold, Marvel’s deeply dangerous book of forbidden magic. Its corrupting influence provides an ideal foundation for a card set built around mystical power, difficult choices, and catastrophic consequences.
Doctor Strange and Thor Face Hela and Dormammu

Four major Marvel characters stand at the center of Darkhold Destiny: Doctor Strange, Thor, Hela, and Dormammu.
Doctor Strange brings his knowledge of sorcery and the multiverse, while Thor introduces the gods and mythology of Asgard. Hela embodies death and conquest, and Dormammu provides a threat capable of consuming entire dimensions.
Their conflict will unfold across nearly 30 realities. That scale gives the creative team room to explore alternate worlds, unexpected alliances, and new versions of familiar characters without being restricted to one corner of Marvel continuity.
The combination also sounds perfectly suited to Magic. Doctor Strange and Dormammu can bend reality, Thor and Hela carry centuries of mythological conflict, and the Darkhold has a long history of making already powerful people much worse.
A New Comic Expands Darkhold Destiny

The original storyline will extend beyond the cards through a new Marvel comic.
Its first chapter will arrive digitally before the physical edition launches during the week of the set’s release. The complete Magic: The Gathering | Marvel: Darkhold Destiny experience officially begins April 7, 2027.
The comic gives Marvel and Wizards an opportunity to develop the story more directly than card names, flavor text, and artwork can manage alone. At the same time, the cards can capture individual confrontations, locations, spells, artifacts, and turning points from the narrative.
It represents a new model for Universes Beyond. Instead of adapting a finished story, the trading card set and comic can develop together as complementary parts of the same event.
Marvel’s History Becomes a Secret Lair Countdown
Fans will not need to wait until 2027 for the next major Marvel release. Wizards also announced the Secret Lair Countdown Kit: Marvel’s History of Heroes, a 30-card celebration of Marvel Comics history.
More than 30 artists contributed to the collection, interpreting defining moments from across the Marvel timeline. Featured events include the Fantastic Four gaining their powers from cosmic rays, Tony Stark building his first Iron Man armor with Ho Yinsen, and Jean Grey’s transformation into Phoenix.
The Countdown Kit format should let collectors reveal one card at a time while progressing through Marvel’s history. With 30 cards spanning generations of stories, the set has room to celebrate iconic milestones alongside moments that have never appeared on a Magic card.
The limited-quantity Secret Lair Countdown Kit: Marvel’s History of Heroes goes on sale exclusively through Secret Lair on November 2, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. PT. It will cost $199.99 while supplies last.
Doctor Doom Prepares His Own Doomsdrop

Doctor Doom will not allow the other heroes and villains to claim every announcement.
Wizards offered the first look at the upcoming Doomsdrop, a collection of comic-inspired Secret Lair drops predominantly featuring Victor von Doom. Other Marvel guests will appear, although Doom will naturally remain the primary attraction.
No complete card lists, prices, or sale date were announced during the preview. However, the plural language surrounding its drops suggests a larger Doom-centered release rather than one standalone collection.
Between Marvel’s History of Heroes, Doomsdrop, and Darkhold Destiny, Wizards is expanding its Marvel partnership across Secret Lair collectibles, full sets, comics, and original storytelling.
Regal Gives Doctor Doom the Infinity Vision Treatment

A limited Doctor Doom Magic: The Gathering card will also arrive alongside Avengers: Doomsday.
Fans who see the movie in Regal Cinemas’ Infinity Vision format during opening weekend will receive the exclusive card while supplies last. Tickets are available through Regal’s website.
The promotion connects Marvel’s theatrical future directly to the tabletop and gives collectors another reason to see Doom claim the largest screen available. Wizards has not revealed whether the card uses an existing Magic design or introduces something completely new.
Magic: The Gathering | Marvel: Darkhold Destiny launches April 7, 2027. The Secret Lair Countdown Kit: Marvel’s History of Heroes arrives considerably sooner, with orders opening November 2, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. PT for $199.99.
