Japan clawed its way back from zero, but Godzilla is ready to plunge it even further into the negative. TOHO and GKIDS have released a terrifying new trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero, confirming that the monster survived the climactic events of Godzilla Minus One. Director Takashi Yamazaki’s highly anticipated sequel will make its world premiere at the New York Film Festival before charging into North American theaters on November 6, 2026.
Godzilla Was Not Fully Destroyed
The new trailer begins by answering the question left behind by Godzilla Minus One: Godzilla is not dead.
Two years have passed since Koichi Shikishima and the citizens of Japan launched their desperate operation against the monster. The sequel picks up in 1949 as the country struggles to rebuild from World War II and Godzilla’s devastating attack.

Just as daily life begins to return, another calamity destroys that fragile sense of peace. The trailer offers a first look at a new kaiju extermination operation as humanity prepares for another seemingly impossible fight.
This time, there can be no temporary victory.

The Shikishima Family Faces Another Calamity in Godzilla Minus Zero
Godzilla Minus Zero continues the story of the Shikishima family rather than abandoning the human characters who gave the previous film its emotional power.
Godzilla Minus One succeeded because its monster spectacle never overwhelmed its personal story. Godzilla represented another impossible trauma confronting people who had already survived war, loss, guilt, and national devastation.
Yamazaki appears committed to preserving that human perspective in the sequel. The destruction may be larger and the visual effects more ambitious, but the story remains grounded at eye level as ordinary people fight to protect the lives they rebuilt.
Masami Nagasawa Joins the Fight
The new trailer introduces Masami Nagasawa as Makoto Aoyama, a brilliant weather forecaster assigned to the Disaster Response Bureau. Her expertise may prove essential as mysterious blue energy surrounds Godzilla and bright golden lightning strikes from above.
Jun Kunimura joins the cast as Dr. Ogata, while Ko Maehara plays Akira Hagiwara, the assistant to Professor Murakami, portrayed by Min Tanaka.

Motosuke Iida will reprise his role as Akio Itagaki. The Toyo Balloon section chief made significant contributions to the operation against Godzilla in Godzilla Minus One, making his return particularly appropriate as Japan prepares another plan.
Kenji Misuhashi, Eita Okuno, and Kai Inowaki have also joined the ensemble alongside the previously announced new and returning cast members.
Godzilla Minus Zero Makes Japanese IMAX History
Godzilla Minus Zero is the first Japanese production filmed specifically for IMAX. Yamazaki and his team shot the movie entirely in Japan using high-definition digital cameras certified by IMAX.
The production has optimized its images and sound for IMAX screens, promising a version of Godzilla built to overwhelm audiences at the largest possible scale. The sequel will also feature more elaborate visual-effects choreography than its Oscar-winning predecessor.
That is a massive promise. Godzilla Minus One won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects after delivering extraordinary destruction on a comparatively modest production budget. Now Yamazaki has the resources and format to push his vision even further.
The new poster offers a glimpse of that escalation. Godzilla stands at its center surrounded by mysterious blue energy as brilliant golden lightning descends from above. Whatever is happening to the King of the Monsters, he does not appear calmer after his first defeat.
The King of the Monsters Invades New York First
Godzilla Minus Zero will make its world premiere as the Spotlight Gala selection at the 64th New York Film Festival on Saturday, September 26.
The film will open theatrically in Japan on Tuesday, November 3, followed by a wide North American release through GKIDS beginning Friday, November 6.
The pressure facing this sequel is enormous. Godzilla Minus One combined intimate postwar drama, genuine terror, and spectacular visual effects into one of the franchise’s most acclaimed films. Its follow-up must raise the scale without losing the wounded humanity that made the original triumph mean something.
Based on this trailer, Yamazaki knows exactly what must survive alongside Godzilla.
